As digital transformation reshapes industries globally, graduates who embody these qualities will not only enhance their career prospects but also contribute positively to society. Educational institutions and employers should prioritize these attributes to prepare a workforce that meets the challenges of the digital age responsibly and ethically.
The educational landscape in Timor-Leste has undergone significant transformation and growth since the nation gained independence in 2002, particularly in the area of higher education. Recent statistics released by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MEJD) reflect a notable progression toward increasing educational attainment among youths, as well as a growing trend towards higher education.
According to the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports (MEJD), there are approximately 169 secondary schools comprising 109 general secondary schools, 60 technical vocational institutions, with a distribution of 42 public schools, 5 Catholic schools, and 13 private establishments. By the year 2025, it is projected that around 41,020 to 43,580 students will have successfully completed their secondary education. This represents a significant milestone for Timor-Leste's education system and underscores the government's commitment to improving both access to and quality of education.
Furthermore, the transition rate from secondary to higher education is estimated at about 32.90%, indicating a consistent rise in the number of students who continue their academic pursuits. This statistic is particularly significant as it reflects the societal emphasis on higher education as a pathway for personal and professional advancement (MEYS-RDTL, 2023).
Moreover, the total student body across public and private universities in Timor-Leste stands at around 48,473, with an annual average of 13,000 graduates. This growing demographic emphasizes the necessity for robust educational frameworks that not only impart knowledge but also equip students with the skills required to navigate an increasingly complex global landscape.
Graduates must be equipped to be responsible and ethical in the context of the ongoing digital transformation in education and industry. This transformation is characterized by the integration of digital technologies that necessitate a reevaluation of traditional ethical frameworks.
